Why most small online stores lose sales at checkout

Getting people to your store is only half the job. Most carts never turn into orders, and the reasons are usually fixable with better design.

A small shop doesn’t need a big retailer’s testing budget. It needs the basics done right: clear prices, no surprise fees, guest checkout and familiar payment buttons.

70%average share of online shopping carts that are abandoned
40%of shoppers who left did so because extra costs like shipping, tax or fees were too high
19%left because they didn’t trust the site with their card details
18%left because the site made them create an account

Surprise costsShipping that appears at the last step feels like a trick. We show shipping rules, pickup options and the full total early, so nobody gets a shock.
Forced accountsA first-time buyer doesn’t want a password. Guest checkout comes switched on, with an optional account after the order.
TrustNew shoppers look for clues. Real photos, clear return and delivery policies, reviews and known payment logos do that work.
Long checkoutEvery extra field is a reason to stop. We cut checkout to what you actually need and add express buttons like Apple Pay and PayPal.
Local shoppersMany of your customers live nearby. Let them buy online and pick up in store, or choose local delivery, without paying for shipping.

What a good product page looks like

Here’s the kind of product page we’d design for a small local shop. Switch between shipping and pickup to see how the same page can serve online shoppers and people who live down the road.

    • Price, options and stock shown above the fold
    • One clear Add to cart button, plus express payment
    • Delivery or pickup details right next to the button
    • Reviews and policies close to where people decide

    Our ecommerce website design services

Every store is different, but these are the parts we plan into every online store we build.

Store design that fits your brand

A custom homepage and layout built around your products, not a theme everyone else uses.

    Product pages that sell

Large photos, clear options like size and color, stock status, delivery details and reviews, all easy to read on a phone.

    Category pages and filters

Simple categories and filters so shoppers find the right item in a few taps.

    Short, clear checkout

Guest checkout, as few fields as possible and the full total shown before anyone types a card number.

    Payments people already use

Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, connected through official WooCommerce payment extensions.

    Shipping rules

Flat rates, free shipping over a set amount or rates by zone. We set up the rules that match how you really ship.

    Local pickup and delivery

Let nearby customers pick up in store or choose local delivery to the ZIP codes you cover.

    Sales tax setup

Tax rates configured for where you sell, so the right tax shows at checkout. Your accountant still has the final word.

    Inventory and in-store sync

If you sell in person with Square, we can connect it so stock levels stay in step between the shop and the website.

    Training and handover

We show you how to add products, change prices and process orders yourself.

Want to see your shop’s homepage before you commit? We’ll design it for free.

What a small business ecommerce website costs

We don’t have one fixed price for online stores, because a shop with 15 products and local pickup is a very different job from one with 800 products shipping across the country. So we quote every ecommerce site upfront, in writing. These things move the number.

How many products you sellTen products can be added by hand. Hundreds need an import. Variations like size and color add setup time too.
How people payOne card processor is simple. Adding PayPal, Venmo, Square or buy now, pay later options adds testing. We set up and test every method you choose.
How orders reach customersFlat rate shipping is quick to set up. Live carrier rates, several shipping zones, pickup at more than one location or local delivery windows take longer. We match the setup to how you really fill orders.
Sales taxSelling in one state is usually simple. Selling to many states means more rates. We set up the rates your accountant confirms, or connect an automated tax service.
IntegrationsSquare, email marketing, accounting software or subscriptions. Each connection is scoped and priced before we start.

Our pricing, in plain numbers. Our standard five-page custom website starts at $750 and goes live in two weeks. Online stores sit outside that package, so we quote them upfront with a clear scope and timeline, and you still get unlimited revisions until you approve. Payment providers charge their own per-sale fees, which go to them, not us. See also our guide to how much a website costs. If you want us to look after updates, backups and security after launch, our website maintenance plans start at $49 a month.

    Why we build on WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a free, open-source store plugin for WordPress. Your store lives on your own hosting and domain, and any WordPress developer can work on it later. We don’t build Shopify stores. We’d rather hand you a store you fully control.

It also covers the payment options small businesses ask for. The official Stripe extension takes major cards and Apple Pay with no setup or monthly fee from WooCommerce, only Stripe’s fee per sale. WooCommerce PayPal Payments adds PayPal, Pay Later and Venmo for US shoppers. If you already use Square in your shop, Square for WooCommerce can keep products and stock in sync, and local pickup is built into WooCommerce itself. If you’d like a regular site rather than a store, see our WordPress website design and custom website design services.

For local shops, your store and your Google Business Profile work together. One sells, the other gets you found nearby.

SEO for product and category pages

Shoppers search for products, not shop names. Each product and category page needs to be one Google can understand.

    • Descriptive URLs like /coffee/house-blend, which Google recommends over number codes
    • Product structured data for price, stock and reviews, so pages are eligible for richer results in Google
    • Unique product descriptions, not text copied from the supplier
    • Category pages with a short intro and clear links, so Google sees how your range fits together
    • Fast, mobile-first pages and compressed images

Nobody honest can promise you the top spot on Google. We build the store the right way so you aren’t starting from behind. If you want ongoing help getting found nearby, our local SEO services start at $499 a month.

    Websites we’ve designed and built

Real, live websites you can visit on your phone right now. Each one runs on the same WordPress setup we use for online stores.

    Ecommerce website design questions

How much does an ecommerce website cost for a small business?

It depends on how many products you sell, how you take payments, how you ship and what you need to connect. That’s why we quote every online store upfront, in writing, before work starts. Our standard five-page business websites start at $750, and stores are priced on top of that scope.

How long does it take to build an ecommerce website?

It depends on your product count and features. A small store with a few dozen products moves much faster than one with hundreds of variations. You see a free homepage design within 3 business days, then get a clear timeline with your quote.

Is WooCommerce good for a small business?

For most small shops, yes. WooCommerce is free and open source, runs on WordPress and lives on your own hosting, so you own the store. It handles cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, shipping, local pickup and taxes, and there are official extensions for Square and other tools.

    Do you build Shopify stores?

No. We build online stores on WordPress with WooCommerce. You own the site and the data, there’s no monthly platform plan to keep paying, and any WordPress developer can work on it later. If you’re on Shopify now and want to move, we can talk through what’s involved.

What payment methods can my online store accept?

Most stores we build accept major credit and debit cards and Apple Pay through Stripe, plus PayPal, Pay Later and Venmo through WooCommerce PayPal Payments. If you use Square in your shop, we can use Square for online payments too. We test every method before launch.

Can customers buy online and pick up in store?

Yes. Local pickup is built into WooCommerce. Customers choose pickup at checkout, skip the shipping cost and collect when the order is ready. We set the order emails to tell them when and where. We can also set up local delivery limited to the ZIP codes or area you cover.

Can my website sync with my Square point of sale?

Yes, if you use Square. The Square for WooCommerce extension can sync products and stock between your shop and your website, so an item sold at the counter doesn’t stay listed as in stock online. We set up which side is the main source of product data.

Will my products show up on Google?

We can’t promise rankings, and nobody honest can. We build every product and category page with descriptive URLs, unique text, fast loading and product structured data, which makes your pages eligible for richer results. Reviews, links and time also play a big part.

Can I add and edit products myself?

Yes. WooCommerce runs inside WordPress, so adding a product, changing a price or running a sale takes a few minutes. We train you before launch. If you’d rather hand off updates, backups and security, our maintenance plans start at $49 a month.

Is the free homepage design really free?

Yes. No payment, no card details and no obligation. You see a homepage designed for your shop first. If you like it, we send a written quote for the full store. If not, that’s the end of it, with no follow-up sales calls.

See your new online store before you spend a cent
